Mid-Atlantic Convenience Stores adds Gaskins to lead marketing, Lusk to oversee strategy
CSP Daily News | October 11, 2011 RICHMOND, Va. -- Mid-Atlantic Convenience Stores (MACS), a major ExxonMobil fuel distributor in the Mid-Atlantic region, has announced the appointment of two new members to its executive leadership team. Chad Lusk has been named chief strategy officer, and Derek Gaskins will serve as senior vice president of marketing and merchandising.

Both appointments represent new executive positions within the MACS leadership team.

"As we position ourselves for rapid growth in the retail sphere, we are excited about the knowledge, experience and innovative approaches that Derek and Chad bring to our team," said Dan Pastor, CEO of MACS. "Each of these industry leaders has a proven track record of strategic consumer insight and the ability to leverage brand differentiation to create new market opportunities. We are confident in their individual abilities to contribute to the success of MACS."

Gaskins brings to the MACS leadership team more than 10 years of industry expertise, most recently serving as the vice president of marketing for the National Association of Convenience Stores (NACS). At NACS, Gaskins handled global marketing for all aspects of the association's offerings, including membership, the NACS Show, NACStech, NACS events, industry advocacy, government relations, research projects on industry best practices and consumer insights. He was also instrumental in the development of the mobile applications, social media, and digital strategies that helped the organization to better engage with retailers and suppliers of the convenience industry.

His prior experience includes branding and retail marketing roles for Procter & Gamble and at Giant Eagle Inc., where--as director of marketing for Giant Eagle's fuel and convenience retail business--he worked with Pastor, then vice president of fuel and convenience store operations for the Pittsburgh-based retailer. Pastor and Gaskins were both featured on the cover of the June 2007 issue of CSP.

Lusk most recently served as an engagement manager at McKinsey & Co., a leading global management consulting firm. There he was a client leader in the travel, transportation and logistics practice with a focus on large-scale performance transformations across numerous operational areas, including customer experience, frontline lean operations and fleet management. He also led growth strategy and performance turnaround efforts for several other clients with distributed networks, including retail and manufacturing companies.

Prior to McKinsey & Co., he was a global strategic sourcing specialist for ExxonMobil, serving its downstream lubricants and specialties division.

Gaskins and his team will lead development and execution of marketing and merchandising. Lusk will be responsible for overseeing strategic direction for MACS.

iPad's New Commercial - What is iPad?

Leave it to Apple to deliver another Magical and Revolutionary device that lives up to its billing. Unless you have been living in a cave, or fell asleep under a rock for the past month, you should know that Apple launched a wifi tablet on April 3rd, and added a 3G version April 30th. In the 28 days between the launch of the 3G version, I patiently waited to get one for my daugher, while Apple managed to sell 1,000,000+ devices. An incredible achievement, especially when you consider that the iPad fits no category definition. It is a classic "tweener" that has emerged as the latest gadget that will define this era.

In classic Apple fashion, all this has happened before the official start of their marketing campaign. Of course there has been clever product seeding, gratuitous plugs, and numerous surprises that have resulted in the iPad showing up in Stephen Colbert's jacket at the Grammy's, on ABC's Modern Family, and a slew of talk shows from Jon Stewart, Letterman, Oprah, etc. The viral buzz has been tremendous. Now, Apple finally breaks a rudimentary marketing campaign that seeks to explain to those that have missed the colossal onslaught, exactly what an iPad is. Check the commercial below. Now that my household has lived with the iPad for a couple of weeks, I too can affirm, that it is truly magical and revolutionary. As the product evolves, more apps get introduced, I believe it will change the way we compute forever.

RIP GURU & Dorothy Height

We lost two legendary pillars of civil rights and Black consciousness. Dorothy Height, and Gang Starr Rapper Guru. I remember rocking GangStarr non stop back in the early 90's on the campus of University of Iowa. Their evolution, and Guru's Jazzmatazz albums carried me through Northwestern University too. Lyrically and sonically, Guru changed the game. Enjoy the video below which has always been me and my wife's hip hop love song.

Apple iPad

Reviews for Apple's "Magical & Revolutionary" device are starting to come in steadily, and initial indications are that Apple has another hit on their hands. The best review I have found to date is from PC Magazine. I like this review, because obviously they are not Apple Fanboys, and if anything, would be biased against the new iPad.

Check out the video review to see full details. We plan to join in the excitement Saturday to test out the new Wifi version, but we have officially ordered the 3G version, mostly to ensure we get the GPS. Now the hard part, waiting for the 3G units to ship while everyone else is enjoying Apple's newest creation.

Gotta love April Fools Day. Playing jokes on friends and associates never gets old. April 1st is also my Anniversary date, so I never have a problem remembering, and even if I do forget, I can just play it off as a trick on the Mrs. In any event, the weather is gorgeous, I'm working hard and loving it, and I wanted to celebrate the day with this blog post. Thanks to everyone for their Anniversary wishes. We truly appreciate it.

Southeast is the 'Heart and Soul' of Washington

Sometimes, it amazes me how many people proudly tell me that they have never been to Southeast Washington. They seem to discount that the D.C. Armory, RFK Stadium and Capitol Hill are all in Southeast. It seems that a lot of people who live in the Washington area think that Southeast is all carjackings, drug-infested streets and drug deals gone wrong.

Most people who live here do not realize that Southeast is the heart and soul of the city.

More than 200 years ago, Frederick Douglass decided he was going to move to the nation's capital to further his abolitionist goals. He searched the city and found a property on a commanding hill that had the most beautiful panoramic view. At night there, he could enjoy the lights and fires of the federal city. Douglass said he had found the "pulse of the city": Southeast Washington

Ever wonder why D.C. Council member Marion Barry continues to live in Southeast? Oh, the skeptics will say he lives there because the people of Ward 8 are the only voters who would elect him. But "Hizz Honor" lived in Southeast when he was mayor of the entire city. Could he have shared the view of Frederick Douglass?

Now, people from Northwest are smiling, thinking their part of town is the heart of the city. Northwest is the heart of the "federal city." It has the stone and marble monuments, the seats of the federal bureaucracy, the museums -- all cold and heartless. It has the high rent areas, including Foxhall, Georgetown, the "Gold Coast" and Embassy Row, all out of the price range of most who live here.

The newer, overpriced downtown areas are the playgrounds of the rich, the transients and the ruling political party. But there are not any real neighborhoods there. Please don't mention Adams Morgan. That was a beautiful neighborhood 20 years ago -- before the drugs, drunks and gangs. And parking there? Forget it.

Southwest, where I live now, is the wharf, condos and projects. Trust me, no real neighboring happens there. Good seafood, though.

And Northeast, well, there must be something good I could mention. Oh yes, there is Catholic University, the National Arboretum and Brookland, all past their prime.

For a real neighborhood, nothing compares to Capitol Hill. It has an unmatched mixture of gays and straights, young and old, rich and poor and a good racial balance that reflects the best of the city. The crowns of Capitol Hill are Lincoln Park and Eastern Market.

Lincoln Park is a safe recreational area, particularly for dog-walking. Thanks to the dogs, the park has the most nutritional soil in the city. Five times around, and it's a mile track for running or walking.

Eastern Market is the meeting place, the hub and the best marketplace in the city. Its meat markets cannot be matched: Canales Quality Meats and the Union Meat Co., to name just two. There's Market Poultry, which has fresh chicken waiting to be fried or baked, as well as duck, turkey wings, capon and range chicken. At Bowers Fancy Dairy Products, the cheese sells itself on taste alone. You even get to sample before you buy. And all of these stands are self-owned, not a part of any chain.

For a hot meal, you can get an all-meat hot dog plus all the trimmings for just 90 cents at Union Meat. On weekends, Market Lunch has hot breakfasts that are inexpensive, tasty and filling. The long lines that form must say something about the quality. There is also a farmers market that offers farm-grown fruit and vegetables and a flea market stocked with a greater variety of furniture, antiques, books, tapes, CDs, paintings, jewelry and flowers than you will find in any place of this kind. You have not enjoyed a warm weekend in the District if you have never been to Eastern Market.

Getting back to Capitol Hill, the boundary stops around Lincoln Park, not over to the Anacostia River or Benning Road. My sister, Ronnie, and I, third-generation Washingtonians, grew up at 16th and C streets SE, which was never considered part of the Hill. Now, the areas up to 19th or 20th streets are included. I heard recently that the Trinidad area is now being rezoned as Capitol Hill. That is totally preposterous.

If I want to be suave and sophisticated at cocktail parties, I can always proclaim that I grew up on the Hill. The expansion of the area is a scheme of crafty land speculators. By the time my children are my age, the area called Capitol Hill will include Prince George's County. Watch out, Annapolis!

The best-kept secret of Southeast and all of Washington is Hillcrest. It has quiet, tree-lined streets, no crime or drug dealing, real middle-America life inside the city. Its majestic homes are still pretty much affordable for the upper-middle class. It's the perfect place to raise children, grill a rib or read the Sunday paper on your patio. The areas around Alabama and Branch avenues, Pennsylvania Avenue and Fairfax Village have some of the best residential values in the city. The hidden jewel of this area is Westover Drive and 31st Street, which is a circular drive high on a hill that has the best unobstructed views of the city. If God were to move to the District, he would surely build on Westover Drive.

2009 was not an ordinary year. Seems like most years that end in 9 have been remarkable. I keenly remember 1989, 1999, and no doubt will remember 2009. President Barack Obama won the Presidency. Making history with an inaugaration event in DC that was bigger than the Million March. It was cold as ever that day, but hundreds of thousands of people endured the elements with elation. Me and my family walked from Southeast through Capitol Hill and on to the Mall with so much spirit, hope, optimism, and surprise realizing we were living through the dawn of a new age for our world.

2009 was a very good year, but even more complex. Steelers won the Superbowl, Yankees won the World Series, SE Titans won the #DMV 65 pound title, and the Penguins hoisted the cup. My teams truly helped make the year memorable! 2009 also had its lows. We lost Michael Jackson. My Godsister Erika Harper and her two young sons were brutally murdered by her deranged husband. My wife's grandmother got diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer. The recession deepened and turned the optimism of the nation that saw no flaws in our President into amnesiacs that blamed the worsening job losses, Wall Street corruption, failed banks, bankrupt corporations, and economic devastation, and almost every other societal ill on our newly elected royal family. In spite of all these trials and tribulations, 2009 was phenomenal.

Every year is fleeting. Every year is complex. Every year should be cherished. God has blessed us all with more than we deserve, and we must repay by living each day as if it were our last. The Gaskins and Glamourlife will remain committed to excellence. Continuous improvement is how we have lived, and will continue to live every day of our lives. Happy New Year to everyone. We wish you nothing but the best in 2010.

Blizzard of 2009, Happy Holidays from the Nation's Capital

I am an eternal optimist; except when it comes to DC area weather reports. DC is notorious for hyperbole in the Winter forecast. So much so, that retail stores become bazaars where customers fight over gallons of milk, loaves of bread, and other essentials at the mere mention of snow. Usually this is played out when we get a Winter storm warning of 2 or more inches, and ultimately end up with a light dusting, or just cold rain. So imagine the scenes when the weather forecasts for the #DMV area predicted 2 plus feet of snow?! Chaos & Disorder for real.

I was extremely skeptical, and borderline angry. It was the height of the Holiday shopping season, and all these frantic people were clogging up roads, cleaning out store shelves, and creating pandemonium. Having lived in Iowa, Chicago, Detroit, and Minneapolis, snow is something I have become accustomed to. DC has always managed to wow with exceptional storms though. I can harken back to the great storms of my youth. Blizzards of '76, '87, '94' etc. All seemed like fantastic surprises, and not an annual right of passage like so many hardened Midwest regions that handle snow adroitly. But even still, DC always gets hit with the strong NorEaster that runs up the coast every 5 or so years, and pummels DC, Baltimore, Philly, NYC, Boston, and the whole corridor.

Unlike the Midwest though, when that storm hits, it takes days and weeks for the Washington region to recover. I remember my years at University of Iowa, we would get incredible snowfall. What was more impressive was that everything continued like business as usual. Buses ran on time, classes continued, and businesses almost never shut down. Trucks had roads pre-salted before the first flakes touched the ground, and hours after a storm ended, even sideroads were plowed completely clean.

The Nation's Capital is notorious for snow storm ineptitude. Our snow trucks still laughably use sand. I know its environmentally better, and given the historical nature of our region, more eco-friendly and sustainable preserves the roads, but salt flat out gets the job done when sand cannot. Not to mention, that DC does not have enough trucks to plow its 1,100 miles of roads, and has a policy to not plow alleys at all. That means when we do get our big snow storms, you better truly be ready to disconnect from the grid for days on end. Because the city and all businesses, roads, transit, Metro, etc. will shut down completely leaving you to fend for yourself. There is actually something quite pure and true about that though. A sort of pioneer mentality that forces neighbors to help each other. You see kids shoveling elderly neighbors steps and walkways out of necessity and community. Those same kids are quick to throw a snowball your way too for great spontaneous snowball fights. Usually, guns are not involved, but that is another story about the arrogant officer who let his pride get the best of him on the corner of 14th & U Streets in NW, DC. We will save that for another day, as this is our story of the blizzard.

In any event, the weatherman FINALLY nailed it. In SE, DC, we were blessed with 25+ inches of beautiful, powdery snow. It snowed for 20 straight hours with relentless yet beautiful grace. My kids were euphoric. Me and the Mrs. were even caught up in the fun too. 4 days after the great blizzard of '09, DC has yet to completely dig out. Kids are still sledding, schools are still closed, and the entire #DMV region is on an extended Christmas Holiday break. Happy Holidays to all. Steelers Battle Baltimore Again

It was Deja Vu all over again, but this year, we came out on wrong side of it. Without Big Ben, Troy, Aaron, Kemoatu, and others, the Steelers looked ordinary. They couldn't close out their fierce rival in Baltimore when it counted the most. The best part of this loss may be that it angered Mike Tomlin so much, that in the post game news conference, he stated "we will unleash the fury of hell in December". Not sure that that will be enough to catch Cincinnati, Indy, New England, and the other high flying AFC teams. Only time will tell...

Suttle Thoughts Cranks a Capitol State of Mind

Went to a Go-Go recently in DC at Takoma Station. Had the pleasure of hearing one of my favorite bands, Suttle Thoughts. Pardon the grainy image, but the iPhone video is not well suited to dark clubs. Got good audio though.

In typical Go-Go fashion, Suttle took a currently popular song, and "enhanced" it. This time was noteworthy to me because Jay-Z lost a civil suit for jacking a Rare Essence's song, Overnight Scenario, and taking creative liberty to make it one of his Hip Hop bangers.

Hip Hop and Go-Go have always had a tenuous relationship. Both are inner city musical styles born in the 70's in major American cities. While Hip-Hop has blown up and gone mainstream, Go-Go has stayed near its home base of DC. Go-Go aficionados will reference Amerie, Wale, UCB, EU, Salt N' Pepa, Jill Scott, and other popular songs that featured Go-Go extensively and went mainstream. While all of this is true, my point is that Go-Go is still largely unknown outside of the DMV. And Chuck Brown's Bustin' Loose was probably the pinnacle that Go-Go would bust loose onto the charts or popular radio.

I still hold out hopes that Go-Go will continue to endure and thrive. It is true musicianship with live intruments. The "pocket" cranks like nothing else in any genre of music. I tell all my friends around the world, there is truly nothing like the sway and swell of a crowd full of dance endorphins at a live Go-Go. Truly special.

It was a rainy day in DC as our two favorite teams prepared to clash
in the preseason. As usual, the boys in the family repped the Skins
and the girls the Steelers. All we really wanted was a good injury
free game that we could all be proud of.

Nevertheless, the Redskins prevailed 17-13, and we left the stadium
hoarse, and satisfied by good football. We are excited for this year's
prospects for both the Steelers and the Redskins. Football is such a
great game.

We can only hope this is a prelude to the Superbowl this year.
Hopefully, we will get to see the second chapter of our two favorite
teams this year in Miami.

A woman was working in a post
Office in California . One day she licked the
envelopes and postage stamps instead of using a sponge.
That very day the lady found a cut on her tongue. A week later, she noticed an abnormal swelling of
her tongue.
She went to the doctor, and they found nothing wrong..
Her tongue was not sore or anything.. A couple
of days later, her tongue started to swell more, and it began
to get really sore, so sore, that she could not eat. She
went back to the hospital, and demanded something be done.

The doctor took an x-ray of her tongue and noticed a
lump. He prepared her for minor surgery. When
The doctor cut her tongue open, a live cockroach crawled out!!!!

There were cockroach eggs on the seal of the
Envelope. The egg was able to hatch inside of
her tongue, because of her saliva, which was warm and moist...

on the envelopes.

RIP MJ Hollywood Memorial

Recent trip to LA has given me a Birdseye view of the MJ death and
resulting adulation from true fans. The Grammy Museum tribute and
chronological airing of Michael Jackson's videos on a theater sized
screen was truly special. Watching a racially and age diverse cast of
visitors to the museum pay their respects, marvel at the achievements
of the King of Pop, and dance with wild abandon to his videos helped
me attain closure.

Through death, passion for our generation's biggest star's life has
been rekindled. Michael Jackson was a mega star in an age of
celebrity. His battles for supremacy with Prince, Madonna, U2 and
other giants of his era are the stuff of legend. MJ has prevailed over
all of them in terms of sheer celebrity, but it took death to make
that happen for him.

My LA trip has been a surreal sensory overload. Seeing a prism of
America reflecting on his death by celebrating his life's music has
been therapeutic. I have heard his music pumping in the shops on
Melrose, listened to tributes on every genre of radio stations, seen
cars driving on roads all over the city booming soundtracks of MJ,
heard his music dominate the soundscape in trendy clubs, and randomly
witnessed hotel guests as young as 5 sing his lyrics in swimming pools
with their families. This has demonstrated how profound his life and
death have been on our culture. It also illustrates how his legend
will only continue to grow. Perhaps, most ironically and tragically,
it took death for him to achieve the love he yearned for his entire
life.

The highlight of my trip thus far has been the impromptu memorial,
shrine, and vigil fans have set up on the Hollywood walk. Seems
fitting that in the middle of the insanity of realistic character
actors depicting Chucky, Michael Myers, Freddie, Batman, Bumble Bee
from Transformers, and more, an organic tribute has emerged around MJs
star. A sort of ghetto memorial replete with candles, letters, photos,
and song lyrics. Michael Jackson's impact has been amplified through
death. His life was a circus so it's only natural that his death would
mirror and magnify it. We will never witness a celebrity so big,
tortured, imperfect, philanthropic, eccentric, and genius. RIP Michael
Jackson. The world loves you.

I also can recall wanting that red zipper jacket more than I wanted anything in the world. Oh no, momma wasn't having it. I cried and I cried. Til this day, I ain't seen no parts of that jacket. Even before then, Michael Jackson always captured his audiences attention.

Whether is was the blinged out glitter suit (with the glitter boots) in his "Rock with you" video or all the crotch grabbing on "Bad"; Mike told you how it was - "You ain't Bad! You ain't Nothing!" He came with the moonwalk and everybody went bananas. By the time he dropped the full length movie Moonwalker, he was already a major phenomenon all over the world. Oh, he made his mark on this earth in a big way! Let's not even say "Thriller"; only the best selling album in music HISTORY selling over 100 million copies worldwide. THAT'S ONE ALBUM Y'ALL. That will never be done again by anyone! I was about 10 years old when Thriller came out. I was so excited to see the video. It was fresh! It was new! Nobody had ever done anything like that, so I was glued to the television for the premier of the video. As crazy about the video as I was y'all, Mike had me shook too! You know, with the yellow eyes and the "Go Away" and all. He got me! LOL Confession: I used to turn on the wolf parts and wait until the dancing parts came on. Oh, don't trip though; when dance time came - ROCKED IT!!! I think I still know that video.

I was the guest host of a radio show yesterday. The show started at 3 pm (back when we all thought Michael Jackson would be going back on tour soon), and the producer asked me what kind of music I wanted to use for my intros and outtros. I said "Throw on some old Michael Jackson. The pre-nose job Michael Jackson." He did.
I then spent the next 2 hours reflecting on the air about Michael Jackson's talent, as well as his peculiar personality. That's when I got "the news."

While I was certainly shocked at the irony of a man dying right after I'd spent 2 hours talking about him on the radio, I wasn't surprised. Michael Jackson had that kind of effect on music and our world. In spite of the fact that he'd tur ned into something we couldn't quite understand, we always loved him.
Michael is going to live forever. The life and existence of such an impactful human being can't be captured in his physical manifestation. Most of us never knew Mike the man, but he was always present in our lives. He was nothing like Elvis, he was not the Beatles. He was too interesting for that. He is one of a kind, even beyond the fact that he sold 750 million records.
Here are 5 reasons Michael Jackson is going to live forever:
1) His talent: Michael's music was magical. He was more than just a performer: he was the Pope of Pop. He could go 10 years without releasing a single hit record and still get more fan reaction than the hottest entertainers in the world. No performer on Earth can command the respect that Michael Jackson had at his absolute weakest. He was an industry in himself and the reason that MTV is what it is today – his name alone will generate enough revenue over the next 70 years to support his grand children's grand children.
2) We grew up with him: Few performers are in the limelight from the age of 5 until their death. Michael was a black version of the film, "The Truman Show", where we literally had the chance to watch him grow from a little boy into a full grown man. There is probably no point in your life that you can remember when Michael Jackson wasn't incredibly famous. The world was truly his stage.
3) He was (to be honest) very....uhhhh....interesting: I am not here to disgrace the dead. But let's be real, if we were to talk about Michael Jackson just a few days ago, his talent might not have been the first thing to come to mind. He was a man who told his children to wear head masks for the first several years of their lives. He had an amusement park in his back yard and climbed trees with 10 year old kids. He seemed to have a nose job every week and literally changed his skin color (What the &*^%?). Michael was an odd dude, which will only serve to make films about his life far more interesting than El vis Presley or anyone else.
4) His story was intriguing: The tales of Joe Jackson violently forcing the kids to practice are common knowledge. We felt bad for the child trapped in a grown man's body, and there was something that made us almost feel that Michael had been born on the wrong planet. Not only was he forced to live under the pressure of the limelight, he was not exactly raised in the healthiest of social environments. This only served to exacerbate his extreme reactions to the pressure of being in the public eye. There is nothing sadder than watching someone cope with a damaged childhood right in front of the world.
5) He was our hero: Growing up, we had two copies of the album "Thriller" in our household. We all remember Michael's amazing performance during the "Motown 25" Celebration. Many of us saw the 1984 Grammys, where women were screaming at the possibility that Michael would take off his sunglasses (after he won a record-setting 8 awards). We all remember waiting anxiously at prime time to watch the 15 minute "Thriller" video when it was released in 1983. Who gets to make a 15 minute video for MTV? Even Beyonce couldn't pull that one off. Then, there's the one white glove on his right ha nd, the glowing and flowing Jheri curl, the Moon walk, the Penny loafers, and that crazy red jacket everyone wanted to buy. In case you're wondering, yes, I do have one – I'll be wearing it to work tomorrow.....just kidding; well, maybe not.
Michael Jackson's presence was too great and too strong for his life to end in any finite number of years. The best song to reflect the life and death of Michael Jackson is, "I'll be there." He'll be with us forever, for Michael Jackson will always be the King of Pop.

Southeast DC has been misrepresented and characterized for years. While it is true that Wards, 6, 7, and 8 have historically higher crime rates, it is also true that these areas are diamonds in the rough with some of the best housing stock inside the Nation's Capital.

I grew up in Ward 7, in a neighborhood near Ft. Dupont Park. For years I had to endure wrong assumptions, fear, and ignorance from people not familiar with the area. We were so agitated by the gross misrepresentation, that years ago we started to call our enclave East of the Anacostia River in DC, "SE Beverly Hills".

Great article below that discusses emerging trends and hip swagger that are taking the area by storm. Hopefully too many heads don't catch on and start to populate our hidden secret in Southeast DC.

River East: An area on the rise

05/20/09 10:05 PM EDT The neighborhoods east of the Anacostia River — Congress Heights, Hillcrest and Anacostia, to name a few — are beginning to provide affordable and accessible housing options only minutes from downtown. Historic row homes, condominiums and town houses set on the rolling hills and bluffs of Southeast feature incredible views of the city, access to Metro and major roadways, and competitive pricing levels.

Homesteaders who have settled into these neighborhoods resent being broadly labeled as in “Anacostia” when things go wrong, and feel slighted by the tag “east of the River,” which sounds to them like “the other side of the tracks.” They refer to the area as “River East,” and the name change has become a rallying cry in their efforts to transform long-held perceptions.

“It’s a secret area,” said Re/Max agent Joel Martin. “There are lovely neighborhoods. Hillcrest looks exactly like Bethesda.” After decades of failed or delayed initiatives, the city’s track record for delivering on its promises has been less than stellar. “It’s been underrated and underserved for years,” said Martin. “After 25 years, where is the development?”

The movement to revitalize River East is being driven by a spirited group of young professionals — many of whom author blogs — who will stop at nothing to get the abandoned buildings torn down, the street corner memorials decorated with liquor bottles removed and more than one decent place to have dinner. “There are only a few places to patronize in the neighborhood,” said LaShaun Smith, of Congress Heights. “THEARC offers various exercise classes — yoga and Pilates; IHOP, which is the only place we can sit down and order a meal; and MLK Delhi, which has very good food.”

There is one Giant grocery store, a Popeye’s and not much else.
“We need a Chipotle, Starbucks, and a few café’s to sit, eat and have a drink,” Smith said. Many of the 19 projects slated for the area at a cost of $400 million are under way. The Department of Homeland Security will relocate in 2010 to St. Elizabeths — the mental hospital that once housed Ezra Pound and on whose premises several hundred Civil War soldiers rest in an integrated graveyard. This relocation will intensify efforts to develop the area.

Formerly off-base housing for the Air Force, the Savoy Court condominium development combines an Art Deco feel with quartz countertops, views of D.C. and stainless steel appliances. “The majority of people in the complex are single professionals with college degrees,” said The Advoc8te, who preferred being identified by her blog handle. “It’s hip. It’s high-end. It’s a great place to live,” she said.
Nonetheless, the area still struggles with an image problem.

“There are challenges,” she said of Congress Heights. “We’re like a diamond in a paper bag — and sometimes all you see is the bag. You wouldn’t know we have deer, foxes and bald eagles.” The historic Anacostia neighborhood features beautiful old town homes in the Wardman and Italianate styles. Its rich history dates back to the Nacotchtank tribe, which had settled along the river in the 16th century, and includes a visit by Captain John Smith in 1608. It was once home to Frederick Douglass and, ironically enough, was D.C.’s first suburb. “Since the ballpark was built, people are looking across the river for what’s next,” said resident David Garber, who writes the “And Now, Anacostia” blog. “There is an exciting charge in the air.” Recently, high-profile arts events have been held in new Anacostia galleries. Construction has begun on the Big Chair — believed to be the first coffee shop across the river.

“The future is bright for River East,” Smith said. “There are young professionals of all backgrounds and ethnicities moving into the neighborhood. With fresh ideas and new leadership, the community will see its full potential.” Progress is finally being made.

Having a wonderful time in Dallas. Caught a Rangers baseball game and
saw them win their 7th straight against the LA Angels. The ballpark is
really nice too. Sort of like a newer throw back mix of Camden Yards
and Jacob field.

Repping my Redskins at new Cowboys stadium and throughout town.
Surprisingly there are lots of Skins fans here. Kind of like all the
Cowgirl bama fans in DC "urea". The new stadium looks like alien
technology for real.

The President clearly has swag. He refuses to be defined by convention. He took a quick roadtrip in the DMV = DC, MD & VA for all you out of towners to hit up a popular burger joint. And no, its not 5 Guys. Although that spot is awesome too, and his wife loves their fresh burgers and fries too.

I laughed at this video because like my son, he likes his burgers with mustard, lettuce, tomato and onion, but not the usual ketchup and other nasty condiments. Pretty funny.

Kentucky Derby Weekend 2009

I have always said the Kentucky Derby Weekend is one of the best kept secrets in the world. Louisville is an amazing city, and the Derby weekend is when it shines the brightest.

The first weekend in May, is a marvelous display of fashion, hospitality, and true glamour. As the longest running sports championship in America, the Kentucky Derby has managed to adhere to the pomp and circumstance of yesterday, while attracting legions of loyal fashionistas. Today you can rub elboys with the biggest stars from Hollywood and Music, and also network with true market millionaires and mavens. All are attracted by the greatest 2 minutes in all of Sports.

Like the Superbowl, Championship prize fighting, NBA All Star Weekend, and other over sized sports events, the Derby has a whole scene and culture that has developed around it. For the past 8 years, we have been at the center of that with the hottest after hours parties in the region. This past weekend's events were no different. We want to give special thanks to the city of Louisville, the State of Kentucky, and all the beautiful people that made our events memorable. We can't wait for next year, the 136th running of what I believe to be the greatest championship event in the world.

Mr. Gaskins Goes to Washington

To my Giant Eagle family, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, friends and associates,

After 7 wonderful years in Pittsburgh, I have accepted a new opportunity that will take me back to Washington, DC. This is truly bittersweet. I am a better man for the time I spent here working for such a great company, and with so many great people. Now I must look forward to the next stage in my progression, and strive for continued excellence. I want to personally thank Laura for the incredible words. I am overwhelmed with emotions. Giant Eagle created a world of opportunity for me, and I am forever grateful for everything this great company has done for me.

For those of you that know me, you know how difficult this decision obviously is/was. Giant Eagle is a fantastic company, and our operating regions are full of great cities. I am reluctantly leaving, but looking forward with great anticipation to the next chapter in my life. I cherish the time I spent cultivating strong bonds with each and every one of you, and will leave a large part of my heart in Pittsburgh.

Derek started his career here at Giant Eagle in July 2002 as Marketing Manager for Non-Foods. He excelled and transitioned to his current role as Marketing Director for Convenience and Fuel. He helped grow the marketing of the GetGo business from a small format of 20 stores to its current business of 150+ locations. Derek has been instrumental in branding for the banner, fuelperks!, and foodperks!. For the last 7 years Derek has also helped launch several other new business including Giant Eagle Express, Market District Coffee, and Giant Eagle Optical. His vision and creativity will be surely missed!

A transition plan for Derek's team and his responsibilities will be announced very shortly

We were fortunate to witness game two against the Iverson-less Pistons
at the Quicken Loans arena in downtown Cleveland. Cavs dominated
throughout and gave true glimpses of what I believe will FINALLY be a
championship team for Cleveland. That city deserves it. The fanbase is
unbelievably passionate, loyal, and patient. Hopefully, this will be
the year the fans will be rewarded.

It would be even sweeter if the Cavs beat Kobe and the Fakers in the
NBA Finals. We shall see. What a great game to witness the continued
emergence of King James. Lebron is legend!

Elephants are amazing...

I recently had the privilege of an upclose encounter with Elephants at the Pittsburgh Zoo. The sheer size, mass, and power of them is spectacular! The photo is me and some coworkers behind the scenes inside the pen with the elephants. While this photo was being taken, we heard a a blood curdling rumble. The zoo keeper explained that it was a purr, but to me it sounded like a scary, if not terrifying roar. I was ready to run, but did my best to maintain composure for this great photo opportunity.

Thank goodness this did not turn into an episode of "when animals attack". I can picture my friends and family now saying, "why was he even back there to begin with?". As stupid as I may have been to go into "their" chamber, I will forever cherish my moment with the majestic beasts.

We had the honor of being a VIP guest to the 2009 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony in Cleveland, OH. What a spectacular night! We were front and center to witness Little Anthony and the Imperials, Bobby Womack, Wanda Jackson, Metallica, Run DMC, and others get immortalized.

The performances were even more impressive. The highlight had to be seeing Flea from Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jimmy Paige, and Metallica JAMMING!!!

I am still morose over the end of the season. The Steelers won it all, and I can't wait for training camps to start up, so the NFL can get back to dominance.

I think we could have a second league? If the game were marketed correctly, and played in the Post draft doldrums through the Summer, the fan support would be easily built.

Attached are a few photos from our journey to Tampa for Superbowl XLIII. Hopefully the Redskins will get their act together and make it to Superbowl XLIV setting up the ultimate clash with the Steelers. Imagine our two favorite teams meeting for all the marbles?

Liquor giants are rolling out pre-mixed products to entice recession-weary Americans to serve more cocktails at home.

On Thursday, Beam Global Spirits & Wine Inc. is unveiling Sauza Margarita-in-a-Box, 15 servings of pre-made margaritas containing its Sauza tequila. The party-in-a-box, scheduled to hit the market in May, will cost about $18. Brown-Forman Corp., meanwhile, plans to release two ready-to-drink cocktails in bottles this summer, including Southern Comfort Sweet Tea. And Diageo PLC has begun releasing several prepared cocktails, including Captain Morgan Long Island Iced Tea.

Distilled-spirits makers are aware that many drinkers don't want to fuss with mixing drinks themselves. At the same time, they want to address a shift by consumers toward entertaining at home more and visiting bars less. Last year, sales of spirits in bars and restaurants in the U.S. fell 2.2% by volume, the first decline since 1995, according to the Distilled Spirits Council of the U.S., a trade group. Total liquor sales rose 1.3% by volume last year, the slowest rate in a decade, according to Impact Databank, the research arm of drinks-industry publisher M. Shanken Communications Inc.

Spirits makers face a challenge in trying to court consumers in a weak economy because liquor is perceived as more expensive than beer or wine, said Anne Carlson, an analyst with market-research firm Information Resources Inc. "They are doing a lot of different things to find their way," including selling both smaller and larger bottles of liquor to give consumers more choices.

Some consumers, preferring cocktails with fresh ingredients, may balk at the pre-made drinks. These new products come at a time when restaurants and bars have introduced cocktails with fresh fruit and juices, and spirits companies have been helping train bartenders to make more sophisticated cocktails.

Beam Global, a unit of the Deerfield, Ill., conglomerate Fortune Brands Inc., says its 1.75-liter margarita boxes are made to fit into a refrigerator and to be toted to barbecues and picnics. The company says it will be the first boxed margarita cocktail in the U.S. market containing real tequila.

Beam Global decided to offer the beverage partly to compete better with beer and wine products, which typically can be carried more easily to outdoor events than various cocktail ingredients. In addition, the success of boxed wines in the U.S. "shows that convenient packaging can be a big benefit for consumers," said Gary Ross, associate brand manager for Sauza.

The liquor maker also will release this month several new flavors of its DeKuyper Burst Bar Shots, which are pre-mixed shots that it began selling last summer.

Brown-Forman, the Louisville, Ky., maker of Jack Daniel's whiskey, plans in late June to release two prepared cocktails made with its Southern Comfort whiskey-flavored liqueur: Southern Comfort Sweet Tea and Southern Comfort Hurricane. The 1.75-liter bottles will sell for about $20 each. The beverages mark one of the largest new product launches for Southern Comfort since Brown-Forman bought the brand 30 years ago, said Campbell Brown, director of the Americas for the brand.

Sales declines for Southern Comfort in bars in key markets such as New York and Florida "have been pretty large" in the recession, Mr. Brown said. Sales in grocery and liquor stores have "softened the landing, but we need to have new news out there about the brand."

London-based Diageo is releasing Smirnoff Tuscan Lemonade, Captain Morgan Long Island Iced Tea and Captain Morgan Parrot Bay Mojitos across the U.S. by the end of May. Diageo, the world's largest spirits producer by volume, has been pleased with the sales of other prepared cocktails, including its four-year-old Jose Cuervo Golden Margarita, sold in bottles, said Larry Schwartz, president of the U.S. arm of Diageo. The company believes the new products also help lift awareness and sales of its flagship brands, such as Smirnoff vodka, he said.

Sales of prepared cocktails have been rising faster than spirits sales overall in the U.S. over the last year. In the year to date through Feb. 22, sales of prepared cocktails at U.S. food and drug stores rose 8% in dollar terms against year-earlier levels, while total spirits sales climbed 4%, according to Chicago-based Information Resources.

I was a bit taken aback and pleasantly surprised by all the features crammed into the 'coming by summer' update. Stereo Bluetooth on 3G and iPod touch, a hint of tethering support if cell providers provision it, and turn by turn navigation, which I think surprised many. Apple had signaled last year that there were lots of problems in providing this feature.

MMS and copy and paste were big features on many users lists, and some had predicted MMS would not make it.

And then there are little surprises, like in-app purchasing. Take a wild guess on how fast Amazon will add this to their Kindle app. Peer to peer communication between iPhones will open up a whole new world of unexpected and leading edge apps and games.

Of course 'push' capability made it in, finally, and developers will have fun exploiting all the possibilities.

It's a good bet that Apple is responding to competition, especially from the upcoming Palm Pre. There was a perception that Apple had fallen behind in the feature wars, and this update will quench a lot of that chatter. Even with this massive update, people will still want to use their phone as a camcorder, and voice dial didn't make it into the mix, at least so far. Apple has said they may have more to announce.

I can't remember any software update for a phone that added so many features. When I had a Windows Mobile phone, updates were seldom seen and were generally not very exciting. Mostly, I remember a few bug fixes, but not many new features.

Apple is to be congratulated for doing so much with the existing iPhone 3G and iPod touch, but I can also sympathize with owners of the first generation iPhone that will get some, but not all of the new features due to limitations in the original hardware.

On balance it is nice to see two trends that I hope continue. First, Apple is responding to user feedback, and also responding to the market in ways that the old Apple did not.

I think a day like today makes most people happy they have an iPhone, as it is proving to be an investment that keeps renewing itself. Certainly, there is a good chance that Apple will release new hardware this year, with even more features, more memory, and likely a faster processor.

Still, this is a rather mammoth update and pretty much like getting a whole new phone. It speaks directly to those who say 'I'd buy an iPhone if it had cut and paste, or MMS, but otherwise no sale'.

Sure, it would be nice if the original iPhone shipped with all those features, but Apple has continued to invest in and enhance this platform, doing things their own way and on their own schedule.

All in all, I feel pretty good about Apple today. How about you? Let the flames begin.

A great societal shift is under way, and no one is taking advantage of it. Numerous trend reports, even the 2008 census, show conclusively that men are more and more involved in taking care of their children and homes. So you'd think package-goods marketers would jump at the chance to include them in their marketing mixes. But you'd be wrong.

"Men don't shop as much as women." "They don't enjoy shopping." "They're not interested in consumer-package-goods messages," many marketers say. Those are all valid points. It's understandable that with shrinking marketing budgets and a potentially deep recession, companies would tailor their innovation, communications and media strategies to the lowest-hanging fruit, women. But this female-only approach, logical as it may seem, causes us to miss a huge opportunity.

Changing consumer behavior
True, men are still not the primary shoppers or shopping influencers of household goods. But that doesn't mean we can't alter their current consumer behaviors. Of course men are going to ignore products and messages that address women's concerns, attitudes and sensibilities. But if we developed products that suited men's needs, created communications that spoke to men's problems or desires, and designed the store experience to be more engaging to men, then they would have more interest in products that serve their families and homes and, thus, more desire to buy them.

Take Wii. At a time when video-game equipment was squarely targeted at gamers and teens, Nintendo bucked the trend and went after families. The result: Wii sold more units in the first half of 2007 in the U.S. than Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 combined.

Another example: Spike (also known as Spike TV), the first TV network for men that went beyond just sports. At the outset, Spike President Kevin Kay told me, "We faced a lot of resistance. They would say, 'Men are always going to watch sports, but how are you going to create [other] programming for men?' Or, 'Men don't buy; only women buy.'" Spike thought otherwise. And it was right. Not only has the network grown its base of men 39%, but it appeals to a broad array of advertisers and is better recognized as a network for men by young males than ESPN.

New product ideas
Tough economic times demand innovation to motivate people to buy. And bringing men into the marketing equation doesn't just give you a larger group of consumers; it means a new set of benefits, a new story to tell and even new product ideas.

When Spike decided to target men, new programming, such as "Manswers" (a guy trivia show), the "Scream Awards" and the sports reality show "The Ultimate Fighter," followed. So, too, Wii has continually developed video games that defy the typical kill-or-be killed options. Thanks to its broader target, Wii offers video games that range from "Dance Dance Revolution" to "Wii Sports," the most successful video game of all time.

In the late 1970s, scientists found a link between a high-fiber diet and a reduced risk of cancer. Few people, however, changed what they ate. But when cereal companies a decade later advertised a relationship between high-fiber foods and protection against cancer, people woke up and actually began changing their diets.

Men as caretakers and shoppers
Given this power of communications, there's no reason we can't appeal to an otherwise unattainable consumer group and maybe, just maybe, affect that group not just as consumers but as people. Marketing to men and portraying them as caretakers of and shoppers for the family can attract additional consumers to a brand while encouraging men to become greater participants in the maintenance of their families and homes. And the more men are accepted and accept themselves in that role, the more they'll be interested in brands that solve the needs or enhance the enjoyment of home and family care. And, of course, the more they'll shop for those products.

Basing strategies for tomorrow on current marketing data, sensible as it may seem, is shortsighted, even dangerous. If the American automobile industry teaches us anything, it's that stubbornly clinging to practices that have worked in the past but don't address a changing environment can have disastrous financial -- even societal -- consequences.

Reaching out to a seemingly less lucrative, smaller target market such as men isn't quixotic but rather a strategy to attract more consumers, encourage greater innovation, and even affect the roles men and women shape for themselves, now and in the future. Instead of emulating those Detroit execs who ignored or resisted change, why don't we embrace, guide and, ultimately, benefit from it?

Lakers vs Cavaliers

I must admit, I am becoming a pretty big Cavs fan. Lebron and gang have been the real deal for the past few years. Today, I had the privilege of seeing him go head to head with Kobe Bryant and the Lakers.

I am not a Kobe hater, but I do not feel he is the heir apparent to MJ. Kobe has always struck me as a selfish player that did not appreciate his teammates. Lebron is a stark contrast however. He is more Magic than MJ, but eventually he may be in his own category given his well rounded game. As much potential as he has, he is also frustrating. He seems to lack a killer instinct. Something that even a staunch Kobe hater would have to admit that Kobe possesses in abundance.

Today's game was a true showdown. Neither Lebron nor Kobe performed up to expectations, but on this day, Kobe's supporting cast seemed to mirror his intensity and Lebron's seemed to shrink on the largest of stages with all the world watching. Terrible performance and showing for first home loss of season. We have a lot of season yet, but the boys in Cleveland need to step their games up if they hope to get past the Celtics and defeat either the Spurs or Lakers for the franchises first NBA title. It will all start and end with Lebron, and he must play better than he did today.

6 Time World Champion Steelers

Me and the Mrs represented Steeler Nation hard in Tampa. I got to pull out the Victory Cigar and bask in the confetti after Big Ben led the Men of Steel down the field to victory. Under 2 minutes left and the Steelers showed why they are world Champions for the sixth time.

What an incredible game! Here we go Steelers here we go. Clap. Clap. Tampa was a great host city and we will remember this game forever. We made history!!!!

That issue has been ricocheting around the blogosphere of late and Pepsi brands chief Frank Cooper officially addressed it as part of the company's pre-Super Bowl press conference this week. At one point, Mr. Cooper almost seemed to suggest that the Obama campaign may have found the inspiration for its own logo in Pepsi's marketing images -- rather than visa-versa.

--Now, I really respect Frank Cooper, but I think he needs to be checked for insinuating that the Obama campaign took their logo from Pepsi. Please realize that Barack was the first candidate to incorporate a logo. Not only that, his logo became a global icon, that even my 6 year old son readily recognizes and attributes directly to Obama. Pepsi's logo refresh is REMARKABLY similar to Obama's.
